COSMETIC NEUROTOXINS

Facial Rejuvenation with Cosmetic Neurotoxins at the Darien-based office of Dr. Chandler

botox

Botox is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments in Fairfield County, performed in Darien, Connecticut by Laurel Chandler, M.D. Botox works by reducing muscle contractions in the areas where it is injected, which helps release and soften dynamic wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic is specifically designed and FDA approved to treat frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet (the lines around the eyes). Botox may also be used off-label to treat other facial lines or to alleviate sweating under the arms and in the palms.

Prior to the formation of permanent wrinkles, fine lines will begin to form on the forehead, between the eyebrows, around the eyes and around the mouth. These fine lines are due to voluntary expressive motions that develop over time with repetitive action. As skin loses elasticity, these expressions eventually become involuntary, resulting in the development of deeper, more static wrinkles rather than dynamic wrinkles. Botox injections act to relax or paralyze the muscles involved in the actions that cause these wrinkles, which in turn results in relaxation of the wrinkles themselves.

Botox injections are completed during a 10-minute treatment session, performed exclusively by Dr. Chandler. After analyzing the pattern of wrinkles on your face, she carefully targets the muscles involved in order to achieve your desired results. With continued treatment over time, the reappearance of these lines may diminish due to moderate weakening of muscles in the treated areas.

BOTOX Q&A:

When will I notice results?
Results after Botox are usually seen within 3-7 days. The final result is assessed at 2 weeks.
How long will the results last?
Results after one Botox treatment usually last up to 3 to 4 months, although individual results vary. Some patients only need injections biannually, and others notice lines returning earlier than 3 months. Results depend partially on the severity and depth of lines, the condition of your skin and your genetics. Early treatment may help prevent forehead and frown lines from forming. Lines that are resistant to Botox can sometimes be treated with filler injections or other nonsurgical skin treatments.
Are the injections painful?
Botox injections are performed with small needles feel like pinpricks. No anesthesia is required. Cold compresses are used to help minimize the pinprick sensation. Topical and/or injectable numbing options are available upon request.
Is there a recovery period?
There is no down time after Botox injections. After treatment, there may be slight redness at the injection site.
What are the risks involved in Botox treatments?
In general, BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are considered a safe, non-invasive method of treating dynamic wrinkles. As with any injection, some mild redness or pinpoint bleeding at the injection site is normal and fades quickly. Bruising is rare and limited to small areas, and may be covered with makeup if it occurs. Other risks are extremely rare, including infection, asymmetry, and eyelid or brow drooping. It is important to have your injections done by a Plastic Surgeon who is familiar with the intricate underlying anatomy of the facial musculature, in order to target the exact muscles involved in treating facial lines.
Am I a good candidate for Botox?
Ideal Botox candidates are those who are in good health, have dynamic wrinkles that have not yet become deep, static lines, and have realistic expectations for the treatment results.

Criteria that may postpone or disqualify you from treatment include:
  • Allergy or previous reaction to Botox
  • Skin infection at the planned injection site
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Neuromuscular diseases
  • Recent use of blood thinners like Aspirin or Ibuprofen
  • Certain medications
Is Botox FDA approved?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA Approved for treatment of the forehead lines, crow’s feet lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults.
