LASER TREATMENTS

LASER TREATMENT Q& A:

How Does Aging Affect the Skin?
Aging in combination with genetic and environmental factors change the architecture of the skin, resulting in thinning epidermis (top layer of skin), reduced skin strength and elasticity due to connective tissue changes and dyspigmentation. This is manifested as appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, rough skin texture, pigment alterations, and skin sagging. DNA methylation patterns (the reversible addition of a methyl group to specific areas of DNA) have been shown to play a key role in regulating gene expression (altering the way genes are expressed without altering the sequence of DNA) and are biomarkers for aging, predicting age-related diseases. These DNA methylation patterns have been implicated in age-related skin diseases and skin changes related to aging and are reversible. DNA methylation patterns have been shown to reverse themselves (shown on skin biopsy results) after treatments such as laser treatments for skin rejuvenation.
 What does LASER stand for?
LASER stands for light amplified by stimulated emission of radiation. The light emitted from a laser is a specific wavelength to target a specific chromophore in the skin. The light is monochromatic (one color), coherent (waves are synchronized) and parallel (waves travel in the same direction with minimal divergence). The properties of laser light allow the technology to target a specific layer and structure within the skin surface to treat a specific condition without altering or damaging other structures.

TYPES OF LASERS WE OFFER

Fractionated 1940 nm and 1550 nm
The Fractionated 1940 nm and 1550 nm lasers are used to treat wrinkles, acne scars, hypertrophic scars, skin texture and pigmentation. The 1940 nm laser targets more superficial skin damage, especially light brown spots such as freckles, age spots or sun damage. The 1550 nm laser is more targeted toward wrinkles, improving skin texture, and treating hypertrophic scars or poor surgical scars.
IPL PR 530-750 nm
The IPL PR 530-750 refers to intense pulsed light, photo rejuvenation at the 530-750 nm wavelength. This laser treats dark to medium brown spots and vascular lesions, such as rosacea, broken capillaries, skin tone, redness, and facial vascular lesions such as telangiectasias.
IPL VL 555-950 nm
The IPL VL 555-950 refers to intense pulsed light at the 555-950 nm wavelength. This laser treats pigmentation and skin quality specifically for patients with darker skin types (Fitzpatrick Skin Type III-IV).
