MICRONEEDLING

Microneedling

Microneedling, also known as “collagen induction therapy,” is a minimally invasive, safe, low cost method of rejuvenating the skin. It was originally intended for treatment of post-acne scarring, and is also useful in treating deep and superficial wrinkles, poor skin texture, “crepy” skin, large pores, blackheads and skin congestion, and has a skin tightening effect. It works by breaking down scar tissue with fine needles to stimulate healing, triggering new collagen production without disrupting the integrity of the superficial layer of skin.

    MICRONEEDLING Q&A:

What are the indications for microneedling?
    • Post-acne scarring
    • Deep and superficial wrinkles
    • Vertical upper lip lines
    • Poor skin texture
    • “Crepy” skin
    • Large pores
    • Blackheads and skin congestion
    • Stretch marks
    • Surgical scars
How long does the procedure take?
Microneedling is a simple, office-based procedure that lasts 10-20 minutes depending on how many areas are treated. Sometimes multiple treatment sessions are required, varying by the severity of wrinkles and skin damage to be treated. Treatments are usually performed at 4-8 week intervals.
    Does the procedure hurt?
Microneedling is performed using topical anesthesia and/or local nerve blocks to avoid pain during the procedure.
What is the recovery after microneedling?
Microneedling sessions vary in needle depth and strength, based on the severity of the skin quality concern. Superficial lines or mild skin texture concerns may require a light treatment, with the skin appearing pink for 24-48 hours. Very deep wrinkles or bad acne scarring will require a deeper treatment, with redness that can persist for 3 weeks to a month. Aftercare involves application of ointment daily to the treated area until redness subsides. Once the skin has healed, sunscreen should be used regularly to protect the treated skin.
How long will it take to see results?
The skin begins producing new collagen and elastin about 1-2 weeks after the procedure, at which point you will notice an improvement in skin texture and a tightening effect. Over the next several months, new skin cells will continue to surface, leading to smoother, healthier looking skin with improvement in lines and irregularities.
What are the potential risks of microneedling?
While microneedling is considered a safe procedure, some amount of redness is expected. The extent of persistent redness will depend on treatment strength. Other potential side effects include temporary swelling and skin hyperpigmentation, which usually resolves with topical treatment. Infection and scarring are rare. Reactivation of cold sores is possible, so you should take an antiviral medication prophylactically if you have a history of cold sores.
