LIPOSUCTION

LIPOSUCTION IN DARIEN, CT

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that can be done to remove unwanted fat in the abdomen, back, sides, thighs, arms and submental area of the neck (double chin). Liposuction involves passing a cannula underneath the skin into the fatty tissue and suctioning out excess fat. A solution is injected prior to suctioning in order to minimize pain and bleeding. The small holes used to insert the cannula are closed with one stitch each. The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia. Dr. Chandler uses a modified version of a specialized liposuction technique designed to minimize complications including contour abnormalities. This is done using long cannulas with special shaped tips to break up fatty tissue before and after the suctioning part of the procedure, and suctioning in various directions to avoid spot area liposuction. The idea behind this method is to prevent areas of contour convexity or concavity. Liposuction is often combined with other procedures, including tummy tucks, arm lifts, thigh lifts and breast reductions.

LIPOSUCTION Q&A:

What is the recovery?
Liposuction does cause soreness postoperatively, and feels like having a large bruise in the treated areas. Pain subsides over a few days and has usually dissipated by five days to a week after surgery. Most patients do not stay overnight unless large volume lipsuction was performed (>5 Liters). Walking is extremely important after liposuction in order to minimize risk of blood clots. Slow walking at home should be done at least three times a day, but strenuous activity, heavy lifting and exercise are restricted for 4-6 weeks. Stitches are dissolvable in the areas where the cannula was inserted, and these areas usually heal with a tiny scar.
Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
Liposuction is not an alternative to weight loss. The ideal candidate for liposuction is a healthy individual with collections of localized fat that persist despite exercise and a healthy diet. Good skin quality and elasticity are beneficial in encouraging skin retraction after liposuction to avoid excess, loose skin.
